Wearing a wig and an unfortunate style of clothing to portray the character he plays in The Aunt's Postmodern Life, the usually stylish Chow Yun-Fat braved the cold and rain to be on the set of his first Hong Kong movie in a decade. Smiling most of the time, making jokes, he posed for pictures, and answered questions from the press.
December 7, 2005 Chow Yun Fat and Siqin Gowa yesterday continued to work on Ann Hui On Wa's new film YI MA DIK HAU YIN DOI SUN WOOT. Although Shanghai remained cold, they still worked on a romantic rain scene near a residential area. They did not have any complaint. Fat Gor was a gentleman; after the shoot he immediately wiped away the water drops on Siqin Gowa's face. The area they shot had many nearby schools. Thus the shoot attracted many students to look on. They were very passionate when they saw Fat Gor. When Fat Gor waved to them they became very excited. The rain scene was fire engine created. According to Mainland rules firefighters must be on site when a fire engine appears, thus yesterday six firefighters stood guard. Fat Gor to keep from catching a cold wore rain boots, but also had plastic wraps under his clothing to keep warm. When he and Siqin Gowa carried the umbrella in the rain, because the umbrella was too low it kept hooking onto Fat Gor's wig. Luckily it was not pulled off. After the rain scene, Fat Gor like a gentleman headed a towel to Siqin Gowa, then held her and wiped the water from her face with it. Fat Gor even joked around with Siqin Gowa for fun. He then said, "Just you wait." Fat Gor honestly said that this film will wrap before Christmas so he will be able to return to Hong Kong and celebrate the holiday with his wife. Article: December 6, 2005 Source: http://ent.sina.com.cn/m/c/2005-12-06/0310918398.html Yesterday, Shanghai's temperature broke the lowest record for this year and Chow Yun Fat and his costar were at the Chang Feng Park filming. They were perfroming in the gazebo and while singing, Chow attracted the attention of his costar Siqin Gaowa and the two were love at first sight.
In the movie, these two were both swindlers but yesterday's scene was when they first met. Chow sang the classical songs with musical accompaniment and Siqin Gaowa came to the park to do her exercise and was attracted by his voice. She said, "Like a shadow, he attracted me." Later after being urged by Chow, she also sang a portion of a song.
To prepare for this Beijing opera singing, Chow said that as soon as he finished the Pirates of the Carribean in the US, he started learning Beijing opera when he returned to Hong Kong. "In the past I have never come into contact with this. They sent me a lot of information, including videos. And also the Annual New Year festival's shows."
"Do you understand it?" the reporter asked.
"Still manageable. I like a movie called 坐宫." The opera teacher of Chow on the set is Chinese Opera School's Sung Xiao Chuan. She said, "Fat Ge is very talented. I see that he learnt the material in one and half month and already looks very good.
I sent him the music clips and I see he pays attention to the marking them with pinyin." But when the movie is shown, it would be Sung Xiao Chuan who would be dubbing the singing. "After all, Fat Ge has not practiced the male portions. Now on the set he really uses his real voice, and when it comes to dubbing, it's mine. But his pinyin is very standard."
But Chow himself is not so confident. "My Mandarin is not even standard. How could I sing Beijing opera? scares me. Real voice? I don't even dare think about it. " But in terms of style, posture, eye expressions, he has already practiced quite well. Those he does by himself. Accordingly, when he arrived in Shanghai, the teacher has worked with him for two days and his progress was tremendous.
Accordingly, Chow's role is around 50 and his costar is 7 or 8 years also. The two met due to Beijing opera but the relationship is very short. "Is it because Vickie Zhao the daughter objected to this late relationship?"
Chow said with an air of mystery. "No, she didn't even know. We were secretly in love and we couldn't tell her."
Then what made you both split up?
Because of reality.
What kind of film is this?
There is comedy and sadness. Very art like. More like tragedy. It's been a long time since I've made art films.
Acordingly, the Chow parts will all be completed by December 19 and then it will end the one month stay in Shanghai.
At the beginning of December, the weather is already so cold. Chow didn't expect it. "Didn't think Shanghai would be so cold. Still, it was good that the crew told me to bring some warm clothing and I didn't expect we would use it so soon." But Chow did not complain and even laughed. "It is very windy. Everyone suffers. Chang Feng Park always has wind." (Chang Feng in Chinese means Long wind.) But the reporter could see that he's huddling and the skin of his hands were cracked and quite black.
When shooting, he and Siqin Gaowa took off their goose feathered jacket. This was the first time his look is revealed. He wore a blue suit and inside was a thin shirt plus a scarf. Each scene took 10 mins and as soon as the director called out CUT, the assistants would rush up and cover him with a jacket and give him hot tea. If the crew needed more time to adjust things, he would retreat to the office in the park to rest. Jasmine would be in there waiting for him.
From 11 am till sunset, Chow and Shanghai's first below zero degrees day spent 6-7 hours together.

Chow said that this movie's earnings would all go to his wife and nothing would go into his pocket.
Asked if he would play the role of a swindler in this movie, Chow laughed and said, "Why would Chow Yun Fat trick others? Actually, it is about love at an older age."

Chow said that by accepting this film offer, he could work with a highly skilled actor as Siqin Gaowa . Plus this movie is about love at an older age and this topic is rare in Hong Kong. That's why he accepted the movie. He said," Most of Hong Kong movies are for younger people. They are mostly action movies or cartoons. But the movies in china has more art oriented." Chow also praised Siqin Gaowa nonstop. "She is a very professional actor. She's very good! She could act and sing. It is very interesting to work with her, a lot of fun. She is like a little girl!" Siqin Gaowa heard the praise and felt embarrased and Chow was feeling good about it. "I could chat up girls from 6 to 66 years old!"
Siqin Gaowa said, "He is an actor who attracts me a lot! (What would happen to this love?) No results. It's a pity. (Did the daughter object?) She doesn't know."
Chow pulled Siqin Gaowa and the mainland crew for group photos and Siqin Gaowa almost tripped and fell. Luckily Chow was quick to hold her up.
