The 100 year celebration of Hong Kong Movies

(3/21/2005) Yesterday the best Chinese films that were announced were chosen by 101 film
professionals like directors, film critics and cultural workers. Six films of Chow Yun-Fat were
named: A Better Tomorrow and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon were in the top 10 films with The
Killer, An Autumn's Tale, City on Fire, and God of Gamblers also being included. In honor of the
100th anniversary of Chinese film, People magazine is having the most influential figure in
Chinese film survey. CYF is ahead with 30,000* votes and TVB starting on the 26th will air ten
different Shaw's classic films. CYF's Love in a Fallen City will be included. *Andy Lau is won

(3/15/2005) The 24th Annual Hong Kong Film Award will take place on the 27th. Yesterday the
best Chinese films that were announced were chosen by 101 film professionals like directors,
film critics and cultural workers. Due to same vote count, actually 103 films were selected. The
list has 63 Hong Kong films including Ang Lee's CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON and Chen
Kaige's FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE (BA WONG BIT GEI), 24 Mainland films and 16 Taiwan
films. The top ten are SPRING IN A SMALL TOWN (Fei Mu, 1948), A BETTER TOMORROW (YING
HUNG BOON SIK) (John Woo (Ng Yu Sum), 1986), AS TEARS GO BY (AH FEI JING JUEN) (Wong
Kar Wai, 1990), YELLOW EARTH (WONG TOH DEI) (Chen Kaige, 1984), CITY OF SADNESS (FEI
CHING SING SI) (Hou Hsiao-Hsien, 1989), LONG ARM OF THE LAW (SAN GONG KEI BING)
(Mak Tong Hung, 1984), DRAGON GATE INN (LUNG MOON HAT JAN) (King Hu (Wu Kam Chuen),
1967), BOAT PEOPLE (TAU BUN NO HOI) (Ann Hui On Wa, 1982), A TOUCH OF ZEN (HUP NUI)
(King Hu, 1971) and CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON (Ang Lee, 2000). (Other Chow Yun-Fat
films that were among the Hong Kong films were God of Gamblers, Autumn’s Tale, The Killer,
and City on Fire)
(3/15/2005) In honor of the 100th anniversary of Chinese film, People magazine held the most
influential figure in Chinese film survey. 30 people were nominated online. Finally ten were
chosen. Currently nominees included the Shaw brothers, Ruan Lingyu, Bruce Lee, Zhang Yimou,
Liu Xiaoqing, Jackie Chan, Chen Kaige, Ang Lee, Wong Kar Wai, Chow Yun Fat, Stephen Chow
Sing Chi, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Andy Lau Tak Wa, Maggie Cheung Man Yuk, Gong Li, Zhang Ziyi
and others. Chow Yun Fat currently leads the poll with nearly 30,000 votes. Andy Lau Tak Wa is
in second with only a thousand votes less. Bruce Lee remains third. Chow Sing Chi is in fourth
and Shaw Brothers in sixth. Over 100,000 votes have already been cast. NOTE: As of 04/04 Andy
Lau is in first place and Chow Yun-Fat is in 2nd.
(3/15/2005) To commemorate the Chinese film 100th anniversary and the Hong Kong Film
Award on the 27th, TVB starting on the 26th will air ten different Shaw's classic films including
THE EMPRESS DOWAGER (KING GOK KING SING), THE LAST TEMPEST (LUI TOI LUP HUET),
ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN (DUK BEI DOH), THE HEROIC ONES (SUP SAM TAI BO), LOVE IN A
FALLEN CITY (KING SING JI LUEN), LET'S MAKE LAUGH (BIU CHOR CHUT YUT CHING), CLANS
OF INTRIGUE (CHOR LAU HEUNG), RETURN TO THE 36TH CHAMBER (SIU LUM DAP PANG
DAI SI), HONG KONG NOCTURNE (HEUNG GONG FA YUET YEH), and LOVE ETERNE (LEUNG
SAN BAK YU JOOK YING TOI). To strengthen viewer interest and understanding of each film's
uniqueness, TVB even produced SHAW'S CLASSIC: THE EMPRESS DOWAGER and LIGHT
SHADOW 100 YEARS: SHAW'S CLASSIC and asked Shaw's representatives to host.
