People friendly superstar Chow Yun-Fat Hong Kong Film Top 10
"More than four months ago, Chow Yun Fat learned that film costume worker Sister Ying suffered a stroke, and was hospitalized and actually personally visited. I said "actually" because he did not notify the press, so it was not a "mission of love" under the camera. Coincidentally, my mother was also recovering at that hospital, and was in the bed next to Sister Ying. When Mother saw this people friendly superstar's aura, she said that day the entire hospital's patients, doctors, nurses all excitedly conversed with Fat Gor. He had no air of arrogance at all, and answered every question. The atmosphere was very harmonious. Mother at the time even said to Fat Gor, "My son is a film professional too, he is XX." Fat Gor paused and said, "I haven't seen XX for awhile, how is he?" Actually I think Fat Gor does not necessarily remember me, but he did not want to disappoint Mother and answered like that. My speculation is not without base because Fat Gor indeed is someone who is "well trained in humanity". More than a decade ago, he at Cinema City taught me (and some workers) a lot about life. Once, probably during the production of PRISON ON FIRE (GAM YUK FUNG WON), Fat Gor chatted with us kids after a meal. He recalled his tough days on television, how he was not worth a cent, and was almost "the era of dog face." During the conversation, he talked about the political struggle in a big company. At the time I truly knew nothing about politics and my eyes widened. Fat Gor caught that and said to me, "Your position is low right now, you won't understand. Later when you become a producer it will be different." Producer? At the time I said that was truly quite far off. Perhaps ten years later I began to understand what was office politics. Chow Yun Fat is like that. He cares about the younger generations, loves and respects the older generations. Every time I saw him he made me feel as fresh as a spring day.
Last time I saw Fat Gor was after the 2003 Hong Kong Film Awards. He and I shook hands on stage and exchanged a smile. He definitely did not know that at the time I was very thankful to him inside because during the Cinema City days, he has taught me a secret to work, which has been beneficial in every occasion, and helped me through many treacherous roads.
It was like this: when Fat Gor was dispensing his life wisdom we paid a lot of attention. Watching this Best Actor expressing his emotions at will was better than watching a movie. Thus, we all forgot about what we had to work, and on many occasions Fat Gor was the one who reminded us. The way he reminded us was very special. He would take his script out of his pocket, put it on the table, then point at it and say, "Doing your part is the most important!" "Do your part makes you invincible." This is the secret of work that I have learned from Fat Gor. After practical experience I feel it is even more effective than the foreign saying, "Think as if you are the boss" and even more zen." - TIN LIK
